Infertility Investigation Protocol

In order to make more efficient the initial consultation, please email the completed forms to our office, prior to the scheduled consultation. We might be able to send you specific information, recommendation for more tests or a more convenient appointment time.

If you have consulted with other physicians, please bring with you reports for any previously completed test, investigation or procedure.
You will be required to bring a photo ID as well, in order to register with us.

Initial Fertility Consultation
First consultation appointment with our Fertility Specialist includes:
Assessment of your general health, previous history and test results
Ultrasound scan
Semen analysis
Advise of other tests and investigations required
Treatment planning

Preliminary investigations include some or all of the following:
Pap smear
Cervical Culture, including Chlamydia screen
Hysterosalpingography (HSG)
Semen analysis
Serology for both partners –Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV, VDRL

Your program will be under the direction of your fertility specialist and his/her professional medical colleagues at all times. Once the treatment plan has been established, our multi-disciplinary team of fertility specialists, embryologists, nurses, counsellors and administrative staff, will work with you to ensure that you have the best possible chance of success.
Most of procedures cannot be scheduled in advance, because they depend on the timing of ovulation or on the ovarian response to fertility drugs. Our clinic is committed to offer the best chance to every patient, providing a personalized scheduling of procedures, including weekends.

VF Initial Consultation

Patients considering IVF will receive by email or during the visit in our clinic the following forms:

After reading the information and completing the forms and the investigation protocol (with us or with other units), the next step will be an IVF Initial Consultation. This includes:
Review of medical history and investigation results
Provide an overview of treatment and procedures
Assistance for filling the consent form
Semen analysis and semen culture
Gynecologic examination and ultrasound scan
Advise for medication and treatment plan
Injection lesson
Financial information

The multi-disciplinary IVF team will discuss your case during the weekly meeting.
You will receive a confirmation and an appointment for starting the medication.
The first injection may be given in the clinic, to provide you with skills for further self administration.
Many of the required investigations can be coordinated with your local gynecologist. We may be able to have you start your stimulation treatment locally, in order to reduce your staying in Bucharest.


Semen analysis
Sample collection requirements: 2 –7 days of sexual abstinence
• Wash hands and penis with soap and rinse away the soap
• Use a special sterile, wide-mouthed, non-toxic container made of glass or plastic
• Obtain a sample by masturbation and ejaculate into the container, try to avoid any loss
• Avoid condoms or other methods for collection
• Avoid lubricants

Clinic –preferred
Home ( in exceptional circumstances):
• Follow the same procedure for collection
• Record the time of semen production
• Transport to the laboratory:
Keep the sample between and
Deliver the sample to the laboratory within 1 hour of collection
Use for transport the same sterile container as for collection
• Deliver personally the sample
• Provide an ID when delivering the sample

Retrograde Ejaculation test
Follow the written instructions provided by the urologist.

Postcoital test
Collection requirements:
• Ovulation monitoring:
Ovulation predictor kits Cycle day 9 –day 12 or
Vaginal ultrasound scan Cycle day 10 –day 11
• Sexual intercourse the night before ovulation
• Avoid lubricants, vaginal medicines or condoms
• Avoid vaginal douching until the test is performed
• Schedule the test between 6 and 12 hours after the sexual intercourse

Sperm freezing

Investigations required:
• Semen analysis
• Semen culture
• Serology: Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV, VDRL / RPR

Sexual abstinence before collection of sample: 2 –4 days
The sample should be collected at the clinic.
In order to accumulate a bigger amount of frozen semen, additional samples might be collected at different times. Please discuss with the embryologist the freezing protocol details.
You will sign a consent form regarding the freezing procedure and the future utilization of sperm samples.
